Writing as a Catharsis

“Catharsis”: Release, Purification, Cleansing, Liberation”. The act or process of releasing a strong emotion, especially by expressing it in an art form”
I have often sat in an attempt to write, without much on my mind as to direction, content or context. The blank screen stares back at me and, usually, wins the stare down contest.

Sometimes, however, a tiny spark (and I mean tiny) of imagination lights up the back burner and, slowly, a warming feeling comes about, from back to front. Much like a spreading pool of brackish water as a tilting, unseen ladle slowly feeds the growing puddle.

As this feeling grows, an idea begins to be born. A random thought; a small bit of information which wants to grow, to form, to take substance. Sometimes it is a diffuse silhouette which has no real meaning; yet, sometimes it becomes a recognizable shape, one which can actually be morphed into a somewhat intelligent line, a story, a telling. I have to be truthful. The less I sit to write, the more difficult this transition becomes. It takes longer to thread that needle, to find the sweet spot… to think of what to say and how to say it.

This morning I took the time to read some of the entries posted over the years. The early ones about Cuba and a childhood long gone and too soon ended. Then, entries which became a bit political and some that were downright wistful. It is difficult to think of those who might be interested enough, yet there have been over 10,000 views over this time. It is fascinating and humbling at the same time to think there are so many people who actually read these entries. Thank you for your patience.

It has not been my intent to get involved in political ramblings. However, what has been happening throughout Latin America and even in this great country of ours over the last few years makes it difficult to ignore the political side of life. I know my thoughts are not earth shaking or greatly significant to that vast beyond but, the beauty of being able to express them freely makes them invaluable. As yours are.

So please bear with me as some of these political thoughts creep into these rumblings from time to time. They are just a reflection of feelings and perceptions. And times.

Perhaps it is right to go back to musings and reminiscing of moments past. Some far away and long ago and some others not so far removed. My friend CheĆto called me the other day and we had a conversation which may be worth retelling… soon. There are floating stories about Europe and Asia which are still lost in the inkwell, looking to be put into words and on these pages. It is like re-opening a small window into that somewhat murky beyond, where abstracts and thoughts float and combine… inviting me to pluck at them and to share the pickings with you.

And so I shall…

Be Well … Be Back!!!
