KNOWING YOURSELF

Most people know what they do. Far fewer understand why they do it.

Self-Discovery or Knowing Yourself, Is Crucial For Personal Growth

Self-discovery is the process of gaining knowledge and understanding about oneself, including one's thoughts, feelings, beliefs, values, strengths, weaknesses, and experiences. It involves exploring your inner self to gain greater self-awareness and insight into your identity, purpose, and potential.

Self-discovery includes self-reflection, self-awareness, and self-acceptance.

Some of the benefits that come with this knowledge include your ability to make better decisions, to feel better about yourself and who you are (notice the “who” and not the “what”). This better relationship with yourself will allow you to be a better person to others, to determine your value and goals, and, last -and indeed not least- to better handle difficult moments.

Common obstacles to self-discovery, such as fear, resistance to change, and social pressures, are always present in our lives. One of the ways in which we can deal with these challenges is by seeking support from others and practicing self-analysis.

Journaling helps to become aware of what it is you do regularly; it involves writing down your thoughts and feelings. It's a simple but effective way to explore your inner self and gain clarity about your emotions, beliefs, and values.

And this is not about winning a Pulitzer Prize for literature. Just let your thoughts flow freely without worrying about spelling, grammar, or coherence. Write regularly. Explore various aspects of your personality and experiences. As you write, take some time to review your previous entries and look for patterns, insights, and growth. Or lack thereof.

Consistency is key to making progress in self-discovery.

Always remember that knowing ourselves is not a destination. It is an ongoing process. We discover new strengths, new weaknesses, new motivations, and occasionally new excuses.

The important thing is not perfection.

The important thing is honesty.

Because once we understand ourselves more clearly, we can begin to make better decisions about who we want to become.
