Cachita...

My Dearest, Loving Cachita…
The Lady, or Virgin, of Charity is the Patroness of Cuba. She has been so since she appeared to three lost fishermen some 400 years ago, about to die in the middle of a storm, just off the southern coast of eastern Cuba. She appeared in effigy and, miraculously, stayed on their boat guiding and guarding them into safe harbor. Somehow, an original effigy was smuggled out of Cuba 50 years ago and She has been tending to her flock in exile ever since. This is an extra entry today, honoring Her anniversary.
The Lady of Charity; Cuba's Patroness

50 years ago today, you came in effigy to us in Miami, the home of your children in exile; all the way from Santiago de Cuba, where you had resided for so many years… It was a momentous occasion including a parade and a welcome worthy of a Queen Mother which, to us, you are. This was the second such trip for you, a trip in which you again traveled over troubled waters to be ever present and to let us know that you will always be our Celestial Mother, no matter where in this world we find ourselves.

Many times in my life have I as have many others, including some who were not born in our island, looked to you for help, guidance or simply, a little bit of love in troubled moments. Often have I visited your home in Miami just to feel your company and to know I am not alone… In every occasion, whenever my tired feet have reluctantly taken me away from the Ermita, your home, I have felt their load being just a little lighter than when they brought me to you.

Yet, we often forget you in the comings and goings of this life; we turn to ourselves and become just a little more selfish and concerned about our own problems when you always taught us that, while taking care of our problems, we should never forget those that bring almost insufferable pressure and pain to other people; whether we know them or not.

A little prayer for them all Mother, a moment to bring them forth before you in spirit; those who suffer from the anguish of having lost all, even their hopes; those who are in pain for their families’ troubles and separations; those who are ill and fighting to become healthier to give just a little more of themselves to their loved ones; those who hope to, at least once before they die, be able to freely visit their homeland, lost so many years ago; perhaps to spend their last times there, in your company and in your loving arms.

Madre Querida, Virgen de la Caridad…. Dearest Mother, Lady of Charity, our mother, our guide and custodian before the Throne of the Father. We come to you today, in the Anniversary of that first time, so many years ago, when you appeared to the three poor fishermen in the middle of a storm, guiding them to safety and liberating them from a sure death at sea. We ask you never to forget your sons and daughters, no matter where hey are in this world; whether believing in your love or not, whether true to your memory or not. Only the love of a mother, such as you are to us, can forgive and help us through these difficult times to, when the moment is the right one, open the way and bring us back to our beautiful island and, hopefully cross that water one last time, never again having to do so.

Thank You, our Celestial Mother…
